Where it narrows and plummets through a steep gorge at Valley Falls State Park, the Tygart Valley River has broken the Connoquenessing sandstone through which it passes into massive, jumbled slabs. In the margins of these wrecked pillars, where sediment and fine sand wash out, a great diversity of life has sprung up. The river is both destroyer and creator, more powerful and relentless than any god man has dreamed up.
From top: royal fern (Osmunda regalis var. spectabilis), a water-loving beauty that clumps in the nooks between the boulders; the elegant tassel rue (Trauvetteria carolinensis), with its sharply-lobed, palmate leaves; yellow star grass (Hypoxis hirsuta), whose six-petaled flowers and delicate, grass-like leaves are quite attractive; American water willow (Justicia americana), whose creeping rhizomes allow the plant to form extensive colonies at the edges of streams and rivers; silky dogwood (Cornus amomum), a thicket-forming wetlands lover; and ebony spleenwort (Asplenium platyneuron), easily identified by its brown stem.

In Branson, ride, ride, ride!
I got to ride, ride, ride in Branson, I’m a lucky girl. I recently returned from a trip to Branson, I went with Sara Broers, of Travel with Sara. She was on a press trip, and I got to tag along, and we stayed at the amazing Chateau on the Lake Resort Spa! While there I learned all about riding in Branson, riding on a tram, a shuttle, a coaster, a Pink Jeep, a people mover, a paddle boat, and a 3D…

American dogwood (poetry)
Tumblr media
Spring blooms following cherry blossoms
American dogwood.
Autumn leaves are a sight to behold.
Ripe and fall
The rugby ball-shaped red fruit is beautiful.
Its crimson fruit,
I don't know if it's edible.
But I also want to try it.
Note: Ota City, Gunma Prefecture, where I live, is a sister city of Burbank City in the United States. She was given an American dogwood as a token of her friendship.

A poem by Linda Pastan
Tumblr media
Elegy
Our final dogwood leans over the forest floor
offering berries to the birds, the squirrels.
It’s a relic of the days when dogwoods
flourished—creamy lace in April, spilled milk in May—
their beauty delicate but commonplace.
When I took for granted that the world would remain
as it was, and I would remain with it.

I don't mean it in a creepy way I promise, but I feel a kinship with China, Japan and Korea i wish more people from my region shared, because...we have sister ecosystems!
It's actually amazing, there are so many plant genera that are not closely related to anything else and just have a couple living species: One (or two) from mid latitude Southeast Asia, and one from the Southeastern USA.
For example, the two living lotus species (sacred lotus and American lotus), the two living tulip tree/ Liriodendron species, the Chinese and American sweetgums (Liquidambar spp.) the Chinese and American trumpet vines (Campsis spp.) the Chinese, Japanese and American wisteria (Wisteria spp), the Chinese, Taiwan and American sassafras (Sassafras spp.) I KNOW i'm forgetting many of them because there are so many. Twins!!!!
And there's so many iconic plant groups shared in common between East Asia and SE USA. Like dogwoods, magnolias, rhododendrons, we even have our own bamboo!!!
I think a lot of how strangely familiar each ecosystem would feel to someone visiting from the other one.
And I bet there's a lot of ecological knowledge and insights we could share with each other...
Sister ecosystems...
